Serge Roche (1906-1988) was a prominent French furniture and decorative arts designer known for his unique and extravagant style. Born on October 3, 1906, in Paris, France, Roche displayed a keen interest in art and design from an early age. Roche studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he honed his skills in sculpture and architecture. His education provided him with a solid foundation in classical design principles, which he would later incorporate into his work. In the 1930s, Roche began his career as a decorator, working on various projects for wealthy clients and renowned interior designers. His talent for creating opulent and theatrical spaces quickly gained recognition, and he became sought after by the elite of Parisian society. One of Roche's most notable contributions to the world of design was his collaboration with the esteemed French fashion designer, Jeanne Lanvin. Roche worked closely with Lanvin, designing furniture and decorative elements for her fashion house and private residences. His creations perfectly complemented Lanvin's elegant and sophisticated style, and together, they formed a powerful creative partnership. Roche's designs often featured ornate and intricate details, such as gilded finishes, mirrored surfaces, and elaborate carvings. He drew inspiration from various historical periods, including the Baroque and Rococo styles, infusing them with a modern sensibility. Roche's furniture pieces were known for their grandeur and theatricality, making them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. In addition to his work with Lanvin, Roche collaborated with other renowned designers and architects of his time, including Emilio Terry and Armand-Albert Rateau. These collaborations further solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the world of decorative arts. Roche's influence extended beyond furniture and interior design. He also ventured into the realm of set design, creating stunning stage sets for ballets and theatrical productions. His ability to create visually captivating and immersive environments made him a sought-after designer in the performing arts industry. Despite his success and recognition, Roche's career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. He served in the French army during the war, and upon his return, he resumed his work as a designer, adapting his style to the changing tastes of the post-war era. Serge Roche continued to work until his death on June 12, 1988, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the world
