After high school, Bertoia enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. There, he studied under the renowned designer and architect Eliel Saarinen and his son, Eero Saarinen. Bertoia's time at Cranbrook proved to be influential in shaping his artistic vision and design philosophy. In the early 1940s, Bertoia moved to California to work with Charles and Ray Eames at the Evans Products Company. During his time there, he honed his skills in furniture design and experimented with new materials and techniques. It was during this period that he developed his signature wire grid technique, which would later become synonymous with his name. In 1950, Bertoia moved to Pennsylvania to work with Hans and Florence Knoll at the Knoll furniture company. It was during his tenure at Knoll that he created his most famous design, the Bertoia chair. This chair, made entirely of welded steel wires, revolutionized modern furniture design with its sculptural form and innovative use of materials. Throughout his career, Bertoia continued to explore different artistic mediums, including sculpture, jewelry, and printmaking. He exhibited his artwork in numerous galleries and museums around the world, gaining recognition for his unique approach to form, texture, and sound. Bertoia's contributions to the field of furniture design and his artistic achievements were widely recognized during his lifetime. In 1955, he received the prestigious award for "Designer of the Year" from the American Institute of Architects. His work continues to be highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Harry Bertoia passed away on November 6, 1978, leaving behind a rich legacy of innovative design and artistic expression. His contributions to the field of furniture and decorative arts continue to inspire and influence designers to this day
