About Michael Thonet

Michael Thonet (1796-1871) was a highly influential German-Austrian furniture designer and entrepreneur. He is best known for his pioneering work in bentwood furniture, which revolutionized the furniture industry and continues to be highly regarded today.

Born on July 2, 1796, in Boppard, Germany, Thonet began his career as a cabinetmaker in his father's workshop. In the early 19th century, he moved to Vienna, where he quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs and craftsmanship. Thonet's breakthrough came in the 1830s when he developed a technique to bend solid beechwood using steam. This groundbreaking method allowed him to create curved forms that were both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
