Saarinen's design philosophy was deeply influenced by his father, Eliel Saarinen, who was also an architect. Eero Saarinen's early works showcased his talent for combining functionality and aesthetics. During his time at Cranbrook, he collaborated with Charles Eames on a series of furniture designs, including the iconic "Organic Chair" and the "Tulip Chair." These pieces displayed Saarinen's innovative approach to form and material, with their sleek lines and use of new materials such as fiberglass. In the 1940s and 1950s, Saarinen gained international recognition for his architectural designs, most notably the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, and the TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. These projects exemplified his ability to create structures that seamlessly integrated with their surroundings while pushing the boundaries of engineering and construction. In addition to his architectural achievements, Saarinen made significant contributions to the world of furniture design. His iconic creations, such as the "Womb Chair" and the "Tulip Table," are still highly sought after today. Saarinen's furniture designs were characterized by their clean lines, organic shapes, and use of innovative materials. He believed that furniture should be both functional and visually appealing, and his designs reflected this philosophy. Tragically, Saarinen's career was cut short when he passed away at the age of 51 due to a brain tumor. However, his impact on the fields of architecture and design continues to be felt to this day. His innovative approach to form, material, and functionality revolutionized the way we think about furniture and decorative arts. Eero Saarinen's work remains influential and continues to inspire designers and artists worldwide.
