In 1897, he moved to Paris, France, where he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the Académie Julian. It was during this time that he developed a keen interest in the ancient Japanese lacquer technique known as urushi. Dunand's fascination with urushi led him to study the art form extensively, eventually becoming one of the foremost experts on the subject. He mastered the intricate process of applying multiple layers of lacquer to create a durable and lustrous finish. This expertise would become a defining characteristic of his work. In 1904, Dunand established his own workshop in Paris, where he began producing a wide range of decorative objects, including furniture, screens, vases, and jewelry. His creations showcased a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics, characterized by sleek lines, geometric patterns, and bold colors. Throughout his career, Dunand collaborated with many renowned artists and designers of the time, such as Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann and Pierre Legrain. These collaborations allowed him to expand his artistic horizons and experiment with new techniques and styles. His ability to adapt his designs to various contexts and collaborate with other artists was a testament to his versatility and open-mindedness. One of Dunand's most significant achievements was his contribution to the interior design of several iconic ocean liners, including the Normandie and the Ile de France. His exquisite lacquered panels and furniture adorned these luxurious vessels, further solidifying his reputation as a master of his craft. In addition to his work in the decorative arts, Dunand also gained recognition as a talented painter. His paintings often featured abstract compositions and vibrant colors, reflecting the influence of the Art Deco movement on his artistic sensibilities. Jean Dunand's artistic legacy continues to inspire and captivate enthusiasts of the Art Deco style. His innovative use of materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and dedication to preserving traditional techniques have left an indelible mark on the world of furniture and decorative
