In the 1930s, Mathsson started experimenting with modernist and functionalist design principles, which were gaining popularity at the time. He was particularly drawn to the ideas of simplicity, functionality, and ergonomics. This led him to create his iconic "Grasshopper" chair in 1931, which featured a curved wooden frame and a reclining mechanism. The chair's innovative design and comfort made it an instant success, establishing Mathsson as a prominent figure in the design world. Throughout his career, Mathsson continued to push boundaries and explore new materials and techniques. He was known for his use of bentwood and laminated wood, which allowed him to create organic and flowing forms in his furniture pieces. His designs often incorporated elements of nature, inspired by the Swedish landscape and his love for the outdoors. In addition to his furniture designs, Mathsson also made significant contributions to architectural design. He collaborated with renowned Swedish architects, such as Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz, on various projects. Mathsson's architectural work showcased his ability to seamlessly integrate furniture and interior design into the overall aesthetic of a space. Mathsson's designs gained international recognition and were exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries around the world. His work received numerous awards, including the prestigious Lunning Prize in 1954 and the Prince Eugen Medal in 1978. Bruno Mathsson's legacy continues to inspire contemporary designers, and his furniture designs remain highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. His emphasis on functionality, comfort, and timeless elegance has made his creations timeless classics that have stood the test of time. Mathsson's contributions to Scandinavian design have left an indelible mark on the history of furniture and decorative arts. He passed away on August 1, 1988, but his influence and legacy continue to shape the design world to this day.
