About Duncan Phyfe

Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854) was a renowned Scottish-American furniture designer and cabinetmaker. He is widely recognized as one of the leading figures in American furniture design during the Federalist period.

Born in Loch Fannich, Scotland, Phyfe immigrated to the United States in 1783 and settled in New York City. There, he honed his skills as an apprentice to the prominent cabinetmaker Nicholas Bernard. Phyfe quickly gained recognition for his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.

In 1792, Phyfe established his own furniture workshop on Partition Street (now Fulton Street) in New York City. His workshop soon became a hub for the production of high-quality furniture, attracting wealthy clientele who sought his elegant and refined designs. Phyfe's
