Sarfatti's interest in lighting design began at a young age, and he went on to study aeronautical engineering at the University of Genoa. However, his passion for lighting design eventually led him to establish Arteluce, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative and avant-garde designs. Under Sarfatti's leadership, Arteluce became known for its emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and technological advancements. Sarfatti believed that lighting should not only provide illumination but also enhance the overall aesthetic of a space. His designs often featured clean lines, geometric shapes, and the use of new materials such as acrylic and metal. Throughout his career, Sarfatti collaborated with renowned architects and designers, including Franco Albini, Vittoriano Viganò, and Achille Castiglioni, among others. Together, they pushed the boundaries of lighting design, creating iconic pieces that are still highly sought after today. One of Sarfatti's most notable contributions to the field was his development of the "lighting system." He believed that lighting should be flexible and adaptable to different settings, and he designed a range of modular lighting fixtures that could be combined and rearranged to suit individual needs. This concept revolutionized the industry and became a hallmark of Arteluce's designs. Sarfatti's innovative approach to lighting design earned him numerous accolades and recognition. In 1954, he received the Compasso d'Oro, one of Italy's most prestigious design awards, for his outstanding contributions to the field. His designs have also been exhibited in renowned museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1973, Sarfatti sold Arteluce to Flos, another prominent Italian lighting company. Despite stepping away from the company, Sarfatti continued to explore new design ideas and concepts until his passing on March 6, 1985. Today, Arteluce's legacy lives on as a leading manufacturer of high-quality lighting fixtures, known for their timeless designs and commitment to innovation. Gino Sarfatti's contributions to the field of lighting design continue to inspire and influence designers and artists worldwide.
