Born in Worms, Germany, Kagan emigrated to the United States with his family in 1938 to escape the rise of Nazism. Kagan's passion for design began at a young age, influenced by his father, a master cabinetmaker. He studied architecture at Columbia University and later attended the School of Industrial Art in New York City, where he honed his skills in furniture design. In the 1940s, Kagan established his own design firm, Vladimir Kagan Designs Inc., and quickly gained recognition for his innovative and sleek furniture designs.
