Born in Worms, Germany, Kagan emigrated to the United States with his family in 1938 to escape the rise of Nazism. Kagan's passion for design began at a young age, influenced by his father, a master cabinetmaker. He studied architecture at Columbia University and later attended the School of Industrial Art in New York City, where he honed his skills in furniture design.
